Stand Mai 2022

Information and Rules referring to Examinations

  • Two examination dates are offered for each module to accommodate cases when students may be absent for personal reasons (e.g. illness, stay abroad, vacation, family events, sports competitions, cancelled flights ...). That means any combination of results (no matter in which order):

    1.  "Not sufficient" and "sick"
    2.  "Not appeared" and "not sufficient"
    3.  "Sick" and "did not show up"

constitutes a failed attempt according to § 13,1 of the Master’s Examination regulations.

Important: Due to the definition of a failed attempt (§ 9 PO), both dates form an entity per semester. That means: You always have to register for the first exam date in BASIS, even if you only want to take the second exam. Registration for the 2nd date only is not possible. Participation in only one of the two exams is sufficient.

The examination board does not approve any further special treatment - neither the forwarding of examination papers nor a single, separately scheduled oral or written examination here in Bonn. This is prohibited by the equal treatment requirement in the examination law.

If you fall ill on the date of a registered exam, you can submit a medical certificate within three working days to the examination office. If possible, you should let us know in advance by e-mail or phone, then your illness can be entered immediately in “BASIS” so that the examiner is also informed. The note “KR” for “sick” can then be seen in “BASIS” as the exam result. If no certificate is presented, the exam result is "NE" = not appeared with a grade of 5.0.

Please note: According to §63 (7) HG NRW, we can only accept certificates that explicitly certify the inability to take an exam. A simple certificate of incapacity for work is not sufficient. The doctor must specify the inability to take the exam. You are welcome to use our certificate template, which you can download from the "Communications from the Examination Office" page.

Speciality:

It is a very rare case for someone to fall ill on both the 1st and the 2nd date of the same semester. If a certificate has been submitted in due time for both dates, the module registration for this semester can be completely deleted.

May 2022

  • The basic rule is: Examinations must always be registered in BASIS.

Those who are not registered are not allowed to take exams.

Important: Due to the definition of the failed attempt (§ 11 PO), both dates form an entity per semester. That means: You always have to register for the first examination date in BASIS, even if you only want to take the second examination. Registration for the 2nd date only is not possible

The successful registration is the responsibility of the student. BASIS offers control options for this:

 1. If you have successfully registered, you will receive a confirmation by email automatically (please keep it as evidence).

 2. You should actively inspect under “Information about registered examinations” whether you have successfully registered, the examination will be listed here.

 3. You get an error message when you log in. Then you have to inform the examination office by email (pa@physik.uni-bonn.de) immediately and send a screenshot of the error message.

You should not try to register for the module examinations on the last day of the deadline. Rather, we recommend that you register for your examinations at the beginning of the registration period. If you do not want to take an examination, you can usually withdraw up to one day before the relevant examination.

And finally: The registration and withdrawal deadlines can be quite different, depending on the course or type of examination. Therefore, please inspect regularly and repeatedly the „Terminübersicht" at the top of the site.

Please also note the document "Welcome and Information - Admission to the Master's examination...".

Prüfungsanmeldung in BASIS

Basis bietet hierfür Kontrollmöglichkeiten an:

Bitte beachten Sie zudem das Dokument „Welcome and Information - Admission to the Master’s examination…“.

 Stand Mai 2022

Examinations

  • A separate electronic registration in BASIS is required for each module examination - please note the registration and withdrawal deadlines!!! (Terminübersicht in Tabellenform at the top of this web page)

For all written or oral exams, two examination dates are offered per semester. The registration for the module examination always includes the first examination date as an option and must therefore be done before the first date. So please, always register yourself in BASIS for the 1st examination date - even if you know that you only want to attend the 2nd date.

Usually the first examination date is at the end of the lecture period and the second one at the end of the semester. Anyone who receives one of the following results: “failed”, “ill with medical certificate” or “insufficient” in the 1st exam will be automatically registered for the 2nd date. It is not possible to withdraw from the compulsory registration.

  • If one of the two exam attempts is at least sufficient, the module is considered as passed. Otherwise, these two examinations count as one failed attempt for repetitions according to § 12 (§ 11 Paragraph 5 PO).

Students who have taken and passed a module examination on the first possible date can register for the examination at the second date of the semester in BASIS in order to improve their grade. In this case, the registration period ends 7 days before the 2nd date. The opportunity to improve grades only applies to courses with exercises.

  • Failed attempts in a compulsory module must be repeated. Please notice that you have to register yourself again in BASIS when you want to repeat the module in one of the next possible semesters.

Each examination, with the exception of the Master's thesis, which has not been passed or is considered to be failed, may be repeated a maximum of two times (i.e. at the latest the 6th written examination, the 6th oral examination must be passed).

After two unsuccessful attempts, the Master's thesis is considered to have been definitively failed.

Please note: In modules whose examinations are spread over the semester and which are related to a course, it is not possible to withdraw from the examination or to repeat the attempt in the respective semester. In such cases, the module examination can only be taken again by repeating the module.

  • For many of your modules, you can cancel the examination registration up to one day in advance without giving a reason.

It is imperative that you withdraw from the exam yourself if you have not met the admission requirements. The lecturer responsible for the course will inform you in due time whether you have met the admission requirements.

Caution: The registration and / or withdrawal deadlines for the module examinations are not uniform; therefore, please check the “Terminübersicht in Tabellenform” regularly.

(Terminübersicht in Tabellenform)

 Stand Mai 2022

Missing examination periods during study-related stays abroad

For study-related stays abroad, e.g. Erasmus, compensation rules can be used in case of missing exams that lead to an extension of the study period or failure of the module: changing the form of the exam (online exam instead of face-to-face exam, oral instead of written) or the implementation of the exam at the partner university under external supervision. The implementation is at the discretion and subject to the consent of the lecturer.

Stand: Oktober 2023

Those who have passed the examination on the first date can also take part on the second examination date of the same semester to improve their grade; the better of the two grades then applies. This only applies to courses in physics and astronomy that consist of a "lecture with exercises".

If you want to take advantage of this opportunity, you have to register yourself for the second appointment in BASIS.

Deadline for registration and withdrawal to improve grades: Up to 7 days (= 1 week) before the second date!

 Notenverbesserung

Information and Rules referring to the Master Thesis

Notes on Master-Thesis (physics930, astro960)“and (Pre)Modules physics910, -920 or astro940, -950, respectively

Usually on your own initiative you will approach a “lecturer” (i.e. Professor, Privatdozent at the University of Bonn) to ask for a proposal for the subject of a Master’s thesis. In this respect you may also ask the student advisors (Prof. Dr. Manuel Drees, Prof. Dr. P. Schneider) or the chairman of the examination board (Prof. Dr. H. Schmieden) for assistance.

Requirements (PO 2014) to start with modules physics910, -920 or astro940, -950 are: Successful completion of all required 60 credit points from the first year of the Master’s study course.

As soon as you have decided upon a subject, please fill in the application which you have to deliver personally, electronically or by letter post to the examination office. The form must have reached the office prior (generally four weeks before you wish to start, a shorter request should be well founded) to beginning “Scientific Exploration of the Master’s thesis topic” – because you must not start without the permission of the examination board.

In contrast to the modules of the first academic year you cannot register yourself in BASIS for the above mentioned 3 modules. This will be done by the examination office as soon as the head of the examination board has approved the suggested topic of your Master’s thesis. You can then find in BASIS the official permission including the supervisor, as well as the beginning and end of the 12 months period. The 3 modules “Scientific Exploration of the Master’s Thesis Topic”, “Methods and Project Planning” and “Master’s Thesis” together should be accomplished within 12 months. Six months of that time are reserved for the module “Master’s Thesis” (physics930 or astro960), including oral presentation (Master Colloquium).

Upon a justified written request, the head of the examination board may allow an extension of the latter time of up to 6 weeks. The application for the extension with relevant justification has to be presented to Professor Schmieden (by email to: pa@physik.uni-bonn.de) 4 weeks before the official submission date, at the latest.

Starting date of the three modules is usually the date that you specified in the application form. The “topic” should be considered as a working title, the period (from start to finish) for work on the three modules is, however, stringent: It is 12 months at most. If the thesis is not handed in to the examination board in time it is rated as “failed”.

The Master’s thesis has to be submitted in due time. There are two different ways for submission: (1) digital submission - You send the master's thesis as a PDF attachment by email to pa@physik.uni-bonn.de. If the file is too large to send by email, the examination office will provide you with a link to upload the file. Or (2) submit three written copies to the examination board in due time. That means: Either you hand in three copies in person at the examination office during normal opening hours or you send them by post, the date of the postmark then applies (address: Prüfungsamt Physik, Nußallee 14-16, 53115 Bonn).

If your submission date is a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday, the submission deadline is the following working day.

The layout of the thesis is free (fonts, formats, figures, graphics etc.). The thesis must be bound (no spiral binding, not in sheets).

IMPORTANT: University seals and logos must not be used in the work; these are the property of the university and their use is considered misuse

On the cover sheet of the thesis the following text must be written:

Title, von (your complete name), Masterarbeit in Physik or Astrophysik, angefertigt im Institut (name of Institute), vorgelegt der Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Universität Bonn, month and year of submission (e.g. January 2017).

    • On the second page of your Master-Thesis you write the signed statement

“I hereby declare that the work presented here was formulated by myself and that no sources or tools other than those cited were used”

    as well as your supervisors:

    1. Supervisor: Complete name (first supervisor, person who defined subject)

    2. Supervisor: Complete name (second supervisor)

Note: At least one of the supervisors has to be a professor of the University of Bonn. Usually both supervisors are professors of the Universität Bonn or one is professor and the other one is “Privatdozent/in” of the University of Bonn. In all other cases please ask the examination board, because it also has to approve the supervisors.

Towards the end of your master’s thesis work the results have to be presented (Master Colloquium) in a seminar. Whether this presentation precedes the submission of the thesis or not is irrelevant. It must however be done within the assigned period of work, i.e. before the time limit of physics930, astro960 respectively. For the oral presentation please print the form “Master Colloquium”, fill in the final title of your Master’s thesis and let the referees acknowledge by their signature that the talk has been given. After that please hand in the form to the examination office.

    • You are welcome to earn extra credit points in the elective branch even after you have reached 18 credit points (CP). There are two possible ways to do this:

     (1) You sign up for further module examinations in basis under “Elective Advanced Lectures”, as you are sure that these courses will be relevant for your final certificate.

     (2) You register for the exams under “Additional Voluntary Courses” and only decide when you get your grade if they should be included in your final certificate.

Please note that you cannot rebook anything in the elective area until you have reached the mandatory 18 CP (according to the examination date). Modules that have been passed after reaching the 18 CP can be rebooked (Voluntary -> Elective and Elective -> Voluntary). The corresponding request to the examination office must be made before the master's thesis is submitted and before the colloquium is held.

    •  The grade for the module “Elective Advanced Lectures” is calculated from the weighted arithmetic mean of all the relevant examination results. For the calculation of the final grade of your Master, the “Elective Advanced Courses” continue to have a weight of 18 CP.

     Stand Mai 2022

    • From now on as a special feature you can select the two modules “physics755 and physics 7501” from the “Elective Advanced Lectures” in the “Specialization” area.

Please notice that you have to register yourself on basis for these both modules in the correct category. A subsequent change will not be possible.

      Stand Mai 2022

    • In the “Elective Advanced Lecture” area you can choose one of three different “Intensive Weeks” (physics719, -721 or -737); credit points and a grade are awarded for only one module.
    • Instead of one research project and one intensive week, you may also choose two research projects (then no intensive week) in the Elective Advanced Course. The second Research Project/ the Intensive Week remain ungraded, but the credit points will be included
    • More than one intensive week can be done, of course, as a voluntary course (not counting for   the final grade).

    Stand Oktober 2023

    • Master of Science Physics: physics799
    • Master of Science Astrophysics: astro831

One research project which includes a workload of 120 hours is allowed to acquire 4 CP and a grade in "Elective Advanced Lectures".

To receive credits for it you must apply for the research project in advance. Examination office will register the module in category “Elective Advanced Courses” on basis.

Late registration for the research project is not possible. In this case, you will not receive a grade or credit points for your work in the research group.

Instead of one research project and one intensive week, you may also choose two research projects (then no intensive week) in the Elective Advanced Course. The second Research Project/ the Intensive Week remain ungraded, but the credit points will be included.

If you would like to get to know more than two working groups, you are welcome to take part  in additional projects. However, you will not receive a grade or credit points for this

    • Master Physik: physics799
    • Master Astrophysik: astro831

    Stand October 2023

    • In order to increase the choice of advanced courses, it is possible to register for one of the following courses from the specialization (physics) or compulsory (astro) catalogue in basis.

    physics62a: physics632, -633, -634, -639, -641, -642
    physics62c: physics636, -637, -638
    astro: astro811, -812, -821, -822

This is only possible for one course. All other courses necessary to achieve 18 CP must be out of the “Elective Advanced Lecture” category.

The registration is binding. It is not possible to change the assignment of the course to a particular category afterwards: Neither from Elective Advanced Lectures to Specialization/Compulsory nor from Specialization/Compulsory to Elective Advanced Lectures.

IMPORTANT: take care when you register for the examination in BASIS that you select the correct category.
