Pupils experience particle physics research up close at the International Masterclasses 2025 Researchers for a day 2025

At the International Masterclasses ‘Hands on Particle Physics’ at the University of Bonn on 11 March (Belle II), 25 March (ATLAS) and 11 April (LHCb) 2025, around 60 students got to know particle physics up close and became researchers themselves for a day.

The masterclasses for the experiments Belle II in Japan, ATLAS and LHCb at CERN once again offered an exciting and understandable introduction to the world of particle physics in 2025. The laboratory tours and the insight into the Research and Technology Centre for Detectorphysics

including a visit to the clean room. A particular highlight was the direct encounter with researchers from the respective experiments, who provided exciting insights into their work.

For the first time, ATLAS used new software with 3D event displays to analyse the data, allowing participants to visualise the events even more vividly. This year, the Belle II Masterclass was held as a bilingual format in English, providing an additional valuable linguistic experience. The joint data analysis and final discussion of the results with other institutions from Europe via video conference once again promoted international exchange and gave the participants an authentic insight into the scientific work of the researchers.

All in all, it was a successful three days full of exciting insights into particle physics, organised by the Physics department in cooperation with the Particle World network.
